Something beautiful is sprouting in Deadwood—and it’s more than just vegetables. This spring, neighbors have come together to kick off Grow a Row to Share, a grassroots project with a simple but powerful mission: grow a little extra in your garden to help nourish others in our community.
A New Season of Gardening in Deadwood
Local gardeners are planting an extra row (or two!) of vegetables in their gardens, with the intention of sharing their harvest with Deadwood neighbors who could use a little extra food support. It’s free, it’s neighborly, and it’s built on trust and goodwill. Right now, we have about a dozen gardeners growing, and about a dozen neighbors signed up to receive—with more joining in as word spreads.
This first season has required a lot of heart and hustle—especially from Jodi, who has been working tirelessly to line up growers and recipients, figure out logistics, and adapt as the harvest shifts from radishes to zucchinis and beyond. Thank you, Jodi!
Thanks to the generosity of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, we received over $500 worth of heirloom, non-GMO seeds—16 hand-picked varieties chosen to thrive in our coastal Pacific Northwest climate. Some of that seed is now being used by Grow a Row gardeners, and the rest will help start our new Deadwood Seed Library, so local growers can access seeds and knowledge for seasons to come.
We’re sending a heartfelt thank-you letter to Baker Creek on behalf of the Deadwood Community Action crew!

Growing More Than Food
This initiative has already sparked a number of related efforts aimed at boosting Deadwood’s food security:
🌻 Deadwood Seed Library
Seed packets are being labeled and prepped, with a permanent location at the Community Center in the works. We’re also encouraging folks to begin saving seed from their gardens for future seasons—and there’s talk of hosting a seed-saving presentation with guest experts from Adaptive Seeds or the Agrarian Sharing Network.
🍎 Florence Propagation Fair
Jodi connected with the Agrarian Sharing Network, which hosts incredible free events where people can share seeds, scion wood, rootstock, and gardening wisdom. Their collaborative model offers inspiration for future Deadwood events. Who knows? Maybe a local swap is in our future.
🥬 Food Storage and Education
Group members have also been brainstorming storage and preservation strategies like root cellars, canning, drying, and freeze-drying. And we’re working on educational materials and workshops for everything from soil health and permaculture to seed gathering, garden management, and wild foraging.
It’s About People, Not Just Produce
Grow a Row to Share isn’t just about food—it’s about connection, caring, and community resilience. Whether you grow, receive, teach, or share—every hand in the dirt, every seed saved, and every box of veggies delivered strengthens the bonds between us.
Let’s grow this together.
